I’m back after taking a restful, and very needed, break this summer. I’ve spent these months exploring both in a creative and physical sense. We’ve roadtripped through the east side of Canada (1,948 miles to be exact), visited family for extended periods of time, celebrate with countless friends who are embarking on new stages in life, and have found new ways to document things we want to remember, like sketching our favorites sights from our travels or filming small snippets from each day.
At home I’ve tried my hand at numerous creative pursuits that I’ve been neglecting or putting off for some reason or another. I’ve started writing a book simply because I’ve always wanted to. I’ve reread some of my favorite books and fallen in love with them all over again. I decided to learn to embroider because I love to crochet and sew and embroidery has always piqued my interest. I’ve doted on our new little puppy, Toffee, and have loved having a dog to spoil again. I’ve finished several house projects that have been in the works since we bought our place 3 years ago. And Mike and I both have created new healthy habits for ourselves that we feel are really enriching our life together, like taking a spin class every week that is absolutely kicking our butts in the best way possible.
I’ve reached a point in my life that if I want to pursue something I’m just going to do it. I’m not waiting around for the time to be just right or for things to fall in my lap to make it happen. I’m actively reaching for the life I want and purposefully putting things in my life that bring me joy.
Autumn itself brings me a great deal of joy and I put together this moodboard with a renewed passion and excitement for bringing a bit of cozy vibes to all of your screens. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
We’ve been making a real effort to shop local when and where we can. A favorite stop for us is the local Farmer’s Market on Sundays to pick up the seasonal produce we can plan meals around for the upcoming week. Mike is a major foodie, and my personal master chef, so he delights in this more than most but, I must say, the fresh produce is so enticing and it’s amazing how far $20 can go when you are skipping the grocery store mark-ups. Right now the Farmer’s Market also has seasonal wreaths that are too pretty for words, a bakery that you can smell the goodness coming from their ovens the entire time you shop, lots of fall flowers and foliage, and, of course, a huge section solely devoted to pumpkins of every shape, color, and variety.
When you own a house the projects never seem to end. The next on my list is to create some built-in bookcases in our upstairs hallway. We added a built-in bookcase in our front entry earlier this summer but that is mainly for decorative items like art and keepsakes. We desperately need a bookcase for all of our novels and books we’ve collected over the years. And I do mean that we have quite a collection since used bookstores are one of our favorite places to spend afternoons. I’m ashamed to say that for the last three years our books have mainly lived in stacks in our back bedroom. We have two perfect spots for bookcases in our hallway and all I need to do is a make a trip to the local hardware store to buy some lumber. We’ll see what I can create but I’m thrilled at the idea of finally having a place for all of our many books to live.
During the pandemic Mike and I were missing our big group of friends dearly so he came up with the idea to project movies onto a screen at our local park so that all of our friends can gather while still social distancing. It has since become a favorite fall activity for our friend group over these last few years. Mike got all the equipment himself: the projector, the screen, the speakers, you name it. He is also especially keen on showing spooky, but not too spooky, movies during the month of October (think old school, black and white Dracula and Frankenstein). Our friends bring chairs and blankets, cider or drinks of their choosing, and snacks to share with the group, and we all cozy up to watch classic thrillers. We are so stoked to start this up again now that October is finally here. I will definitely be showing off our setup on my Instagram stories when we get together for these movie nights this year.
What goals are you focusing on this month? Any that are similar to mine? Let me know over on Instagram!
As I’ve said, Autumn is my absolute favorite season. I love the colors, the crispness in the air, and the anticipation of the upcoming holidays. This background is inspired by the late summer and fall foliage as it changes through all stages of its color palette.
